Four numbers. One target.

Use all four given numbers exactly once to make 24. You may add, subtract, multiply and divide, and use parentheses to control the order of operations. You do not have to use all four operations. If a value appears twice on the puzzle, both copies must be used.

For example, with 6, 2, 4 and 1: (6 + 2) × (4 − 1) = 8 × 3 = 24. Each supplied number appears once. Look for useful factor pairs such as 3 × 8 or 4 × 6, then see whether the four numbers can form them.

Choose a number range

The Numbers 1–9 workbook uses smaller starting values. The companion Featuring 10–13 workbook introduces sets containing at least one of those larger values. The complete bundle combines the two. Smaller starting numbers do not guarantee that every solution will be easier, so check the worked example and inside previews.

Use a few puzzles as a warm-up, let partners compare different valid expressions, or print a page for independent practice. Check the order of operations together. The supplied answer key gives one valid solution per set, not every expression that could make 24.

What does every solvable combination mean?

For these collections, a puzzle is a four-number set within the stated range, with repeated values allowed. Rearranging the same numbers does not make a new puzzle. Sets that cannot make 24 with the allowed operations are excluded. Read the individual listing for its exact range and puzzle count.
